Now Strong: The Castelite Company Spearhead After the Latest Errata

The recent errata for Age of Sigmar Spearhead has massively improved the performance and reliability of the Castelite Company, pushing them firmly into A-Tier territory.

For more context on where the Castelite Company now ranks after the latest errata, take a look at the Spearhead Tier List.

The most impactful change is the update to their battle trait, which now allows the army to declare a battle tactic card at the start of turn, which the player can both score that Battle Tactic and also use the Command Ability, once per turn. Normally you must choose one or the other, but for Castelite Company this restriction is now removed as part of their Battle Trait.

This is a very significant change to the Castelite spearhead, effectively meaning every turn you can give yourself a “trump card” which can be used to surprise your opponent and give you additional scoring.

In the hands of an experienced player this battle trait is extremely powerful.

This gives Cities of Sigmar something extremely rare in Spearhead:
consistent tactic scoring without sacrificing combat power.

On top of this, two other major improvements came with the update:

Cavalry Reinforcement Keyword

Your Freeguild Cavaliers now have the Reinforced keyword, instantly improving their durability and making them far more aggressive early game. Cavalry is never usually reinforced in Spearhead, so this is a huge advantage.

It allows you to:

  • Take early-game risks without lasting consequences
  • Keep board presence even after trading pieces
  • Focus down key targets like Heroes or Alpha Strike targets.

Why Freeguild Cavaliers are Good

  • Freeguild Cavaliers have a save of 3+.
  • They do mortal damage on the charge.
  • They have charge +1 damage.
  • 10″ movement.
  • 3 Health.
  • REINFORCED!

This one change alone pushes their power level noticeably upward.

Steelhelm Unit Split

The old 10-man block of Freeguild Steelhelms has been split into two units of five.

This dramatically boosts:

  • Board control
  • Objective utility
  • Action economy
  • Flexibility in positioning

This is such an effective change because you can now use the units to split up and take objectives rather than being a tight ball of men. This in itself forces the opponent to choose targets and make potential mistakes. The Castelite Company desperately needed these changes— and now they finally feel like an Spearhead that can play the scoring game properly.

How the Castelite Company Plays on the Table

The army excels in:

  • Board presence
  • Scoring consistency
  • Brilliant command control
  • Safe, reliable gameplay
  • Trading infantry while keeping cavalry alive
  • Layered defence and action flexibility

They aren’t the fastest and they aren’t a major damage force… but they don’t need to be.
The updated battle trait means they can stay ahead on tactical scoring while grinding opponents down with steady, reliable plays.

And that is exactly why the Castelite Company rises into A-Tier on our Spearhead Tier List— their consistency, newfound durability, and excellent scoring tools let them win games without needing explosive damage.

Wall Smasher Stomp is a Spearhead that throws subtlety out the window. With just three Mancrusher Gargants, it dominates objectives through raw control, reliable damage, and brutal combat sequencing.
